The Apothecary Diaries

Three reading routes, with a new English adaptation due this autumn

The Apothecary Diaries began as Natsu Hyuuga's prose story. For English novels, Square Enix lists trade paperbacks and J-Novel Club provides digital editions. For the established English manga, Square Enix credits Nekokurage and Itsuki Nanao alongside Hyuuga and original character designer Touco Shino. These formats tell related stories, but their volume numbers are not interchangeable.

Square Enix's manga volume 15 is released, with a publisher date of March 17, 2026. Volume 16 is scheduled for November 3, 2026. A catalog entry alone does not mean a book is available today: use the release date and the retailer's stock status together when choosing your next volume.

A second English manga route is approaching. VIZ lists The Apothecary Diaries: Maomao's Notes on the Inner Palace, drawn by Minoji Kurata, for October 20, 2026. Its first English volume is a preorder as of this check. It is another adaptation, not volume 16 or a sequel to the Nekokurage manga, so adding it to an existing collection requires a deliberate choice.

The official anime announcement schedules Season 3 in two parts: October 2026 and April 2027 for Japanese television. The separately announced film is scheduled for December 11, 2026 in Japan and uses an original story from Hyuuga. Those Japanese dates do not establish a cinema date or complete streaming offer in your country.

Who is this series for?

• The publisher descriptions center on deduction, poison and the restrictions of palace service. This is a useful first filter if you want investigation and court relationships rather than a tournament or quest premise.
• Choose the prose novel if following written explanations is part of the appeal; choose a manga sample first if you prefer the court introduced through panels. This is a format recommendation, not a claim that one adaptation is more faithful.
• Ratings differ by edition: Square Enix labels its manga Teen, VIZ labels Maomao's Notes Teen Plus, and J-Novel Club suggests 15+ for the novels. Do not transfer one product's label to every version.
• The novel publisher explicitly describes kidnapping, servitude and testing food for poison. A caregiver should consider those subjects alongside the label and preview the intended edition.
• The fictional medicine and poisons are plot devices. This guide is for choosing a story, not for using the remedies as real medical advice.

Choose the edition before choosing the volume

For a first visit, start with volume 1 of the format you want. On a bookstore or library record, check four fields: the complete title, the credited artist, the publisher, and whether the item says manga or light novel. Saving the ISBN gives you a stable reference when different shops use shortened titles.

If you already own Square Enix manga volumes, continue within the Nekokurage and Itsuki Nanao edition. The VIZ book's extra subtitle and Minoji Kurata credit identify a separate line. Its Teen Plus rating is also a reminder to inspect the exact product rather than assuming every book bearing Maomao's name is the same edition.

For novels, Square Enix's paperback catalog and J-Novel Club's digital catalog serve different reading preferences. Check whether the purchase is a complete ebook, a print book, or access to serialized parts before paying. A part number within a digital volume is not a manga chapter number.

Keep your anime episode, novel volume and manga volume as separate entries in a reading list. That small distinction prevents buying the wrong version or jumping ahead accidentally.
